3 Things to keep you safe in the heat of summer

Stay safe in the summer heat
With increasing temperatures comes the chance of a heat related injury. Pulled muscles aren’t on the menu. Heat exhaustion, or heat stroke certainly are.
The following is a list of things that you should consider when exercising in the sun:
- Stay fluid – Depending on body size, our bodies are largely made up from water. For this reason, it’s imperative that we keep it that way. Dehydration is a lack of water. We should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day. The gov’ment recommends 64 oz. per day. Frankly, that’s on the low side. And the larger the body, the more that is required. If you are exercising outdoors in the heat, it wouldn’t be out of the question to drink twice that amount.
- Be cool – From wearing light, breathable clothing, to keeping your head covered, what you wear can save your life. Be aware of materials that allow air to move. If it’s hot out, cool air isn’t getting in. Your body getting rid of hot air to cool itself is going on.Even the color of the clothing should be on your mind. You might want to avoid Wearing black while jogging. Black absorbs heat, rather than dissipating. White may get dirty as soon as you put it on, but it will help to reflect heat.
- Wear your armor – Slapping on 70 pounds of armor might be taking things too far. Wearing sunblock will help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the suns rays.Pick a sunblock that is water/sweat proof. Pick a reasonable SPF (Sun Protection Factor). The higher the number, the longer that it works. I know, most peeps think that it protects you better. Nope, just longer. If you’re going working outdoors all day, SPF 100 is a good choice. If you’re doing your thing, and getting back indoors, an SPF of 30-50 is sufficient.
Watch for signs of heat induced injuries. If you are hot, find some shade, or a cool building. If you don’t feel well, for any reason, get help.
On a side note, for crying out-loud, consider how hot your car, truck or SUV gets before leaving children or pets in them.

I learned my less last week. I had the sunblock but didn’t apply it until I got to the pool. Got a little painful later on. Now I put it on 30 before I leave my house and bring 3 gallons of ice water and snacks. Ahh….pool….

I’ve always wanted to have a pool. My brother has one, but it’s just too darn far for an afternoon hanging at the pool.
